John Bell were, according to their own publicity, established in 1905; they were one of the most important antique dealers in Scotland, and had a very significant export trade to the USA by the mid-20th century. By 1938 Bell had acquired the Robert Lauder antique dealership. In the 1930s the business was run by W.S. Bell (b.1902), who took over the business begun by his father after his father's death in 1914. W.S. Bell served in the Gordon Highlanders in the First World War; his three brothers all were all medical doctors in London.
Their shop at Braemar was open in the summer months only.
