Antique Dealers: the British Antique Trade in the 20th Century

Hall and Rohan

Hall and Rohan traded from 'The Mall Galleries' 20 The Mall, Clifton, Bristol, from 1948. Rohan was the son of the dealer Thomas Rohan, of Bournemouth. Thomas Rohan senior was the author of sevral books on antiques and was alleged to have been the model for the dealer in the novel 'Quinney's' (1915) by Horace Vachell. The Antiques Yearbook (1950) describes their shop as '...fine, and the stock ranges over all classes of antiques, though there is a leaning towards fine furniture and glass.' (AYB, 1950, p.204). Tony Hall continued the business at 20 The Mall until the 1980s. Mr Hall is described by AYB as 'a young and enterprising man'. (p.204). The Mall was sold to Hall & Rohan by G. Noel Butler, before he moved to Marwood House in Honiton.
