Norman Adams (1905-1979) began trading in antiques in 1923, opening a shop in Boston, USA, after leaving his father's antique business, Walter Adams, in Bristol. The firm opened their first UK shop in Hans Road, London in 1928. The business had branches in New York from 1929, one of the New York branches was run by the young Alistair Stair. Cecil Adams, Norman's brother, set up an antiques business in Johannesburg, South Africa in the early 1950s. Norman Adams died in 1979 and his son-in-law, Stewart Whittington, together with Christopher Claxton Stevens, continued the business.
