Antique Dealers: the British Antique Trade in the 20th Century

Hamptons and Sons Limited

William Hampton began as a furniture retailer trading from Cranbourn Street, London from about c.1830. In 1869 his two sons, George and William, joined the business and they moved to 8 Pall Mall, London. The business furnished many important private properties (such as the Indian palaces of Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maharajah of Kasmir) and hotels, including contracts for the Dorchester Hotel; they were also well-known for furnishing yachts, including the Royal Yacht Britannia, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary.  They had an extensive antique furniture department from at least 1900 and were members of the BADA from c.1920.
