Antique Dealers: the British Antique Trade in the 20th Century

Alfred Fredericks/Apter-Fredericks

Alfred Fredericks began an antique dealer business in the 1940s.  Alfred's sister, Carole Claire, married Bernard Apter, who worked for Fredericks aged 21 before establishing his own antique dealing business in Kings Road, called Claire Galleries, after his wife.  Apter returned to A. Fredericks in the 1950s.  In the late 1950s the directors of the business were Alfred Fredericks and Jeanette Fredericks. The business was renamed Apter-Fredericks when Alfred Fredericks retired in the 1960s.  Bernard's sons, Guy and Harry, joined the firm in the 1980s.
