John Hunt (1900-1976), together with his wife Gertrude, established an antique dealing business in London in 1933. Hunt had formerly worked for the antique dealer and interior decorator White Allom and at the dealer Acton Surgey in the 1920s. Hunt became a leading dealer and collector of antiques, and specialised in early works of art; in 1974 The Hunt Museum Trust was established and his collection (as The Hunt Museum) was housed at the National Institute for Higher Education (now University of Limmerick) in 1978. In 1997 The Hunt Museum was officially opened in the 18th century former Custom's House in Limmerick.
