John Burton (d.1907) owned the famous 'Old Curiosity Shop' in Falmouth, Cornwall, which appears to have been well-established in the 1880s. By the 1920s the shop was run by Thomas Burton. Burton's shop was extensively described in an article by a 'Californian wanderer' published in The Cornishman 30th April 1891, in which the facade of Burton's shop had 'pairs of magnificent Satsuma and Nankin vases, standing nearly six feet high: Burmese idols; African fetishes; long bamboo fishing poles; second-hand books; and many other quaint and curious wares.'
