James Oakes was a specialist antique clock dealer; he trained as an horologist, and came from a family of clockmakers and established his antique dealing business in 1918 after being severely wounded in WWI. James Oakes was a Fellow of the British Horological Institute and Vice-President British W. & C.M. Guild in the 1950s.
