William Tillman trained as a restorer of antique furniture and by the late 1950s was employing 25 people. Tillman branched out into making reproduction antique furniture and also sold antique furniture, opening a gallery in St. James's, London by the 1970s. Tillman retired from business in the late 1990s, when Sotheby's sold a selection of antiques from his collection and remaining stock (13th November 1998).
