Antique Dealers: the British Antique Trade in the 20th Century

H. Blairman & Sons

H. Blairman and Sons were established in in Llandudno, North Wales in 1884 by Harris Blairmann, a Polish emigre. Harris Blairman (Martin Levy tells us that the 2nd 'n' was dropped in c.1914) began his career in the antiques trade working for an antique dealer in Birmingham before establishing his own antique and modern china business in North Wales. Harris was later joined in the business by his sons Philip Blairman (1896/7-1972) and David Blairman, together with Wendy Blairman (later Levy) (d.2006). In 1949 George Levy (d.1996) joined the business, marrying Wendy Blairman in 1951; George Levy was the grandson of George Cohen and the managing director of the George Cohen group of companies, and designed the interior décor of Blairman's premises when they moved to 36 New Bond Street in 1967. The firm of H. Blairman & Sons continues under the directorship of George Levy's son, Martin Levy, who joined the business in c.1970, and his wife Patricia. Philip Blairman was elected president of the BADA in 1947.

In 1949, Blairman's appointed Smith & Watson Inc. 20 East 55th Street, New York, as agents in the USA, taking the South Gallery of their premises as a gallery for antiques.
